Phone

Switching SIM cards so you can call and text in Antiparos is a bit of a pain. The internet says that the best provider on the islands is Cosmote. Second-best is Vodaphone. For any plan, the assumption is that you’ll use wifi (Gmail, WhatsApp, Zoom, etc.) as your primary communication and use your phone plan when wifi isn’t available. Keep in mind that no matter what plan you get, you’ll have a Greek phone number. Usually calls and texts to the U.S. will be an extra per-minute charge.

Athens Airport: There is a Vodafone counter in the Arrivals terminal between exits 1 and 2. A 30-day SIM costs about €30 and €12.30 for installation (according to reddit.)

Paros: If you choose, you can skip the Vodafone counter and get your SIM in Paros. There is a Cosmote store just to the right as you get off the ferry. They have several plans. One called “Frog” seems like the best deal. They also have a tourist plan called “Cosmote WhatsUp.” They’ll install the SIM card for you. A 30-day SIM costs about €22-€30 and installation is free (according to reddit.)

Ferries

Bluestar and Hellenic Highspeed ferries leave from Athen’s Pireus port roughly every 30 minutes in the morning and evening. There is also a company called “Seajet,” but they don’t offer student discounts. Most of the ships have a cafe if you are peckish. The ferry arrives in Paroikia, the port of Paros, and you’ll spend the night at Margarita Studio about 400 meters from the ferry terminal (map). The hotel’s phone is +30 22840-52362 and email is [email protected]. Your Booking.com prepaid hotel confirmation number is #4883191705.

Hungry? Straight ahead off the ferry, is Hellas, an excellent gyros place. And there’s also a little supermarket called “Market In” less that 2 minutes from your hotel. Down the main drag from Market In there is a highly-rated coffee shop (Coffee Island) and a Greek take-away restaurant that the locals love. The name is ΤΟ ΤΣΟΥΚΑΛΙ, which means “Grandma’s Cooking.” A bit further down the same road is a sit-down place called “a Table.” Just beyond a Table is a bakery called “La Bagette” if you want a pastry. If you want to head back toward the ferry terminal, check out the Paros Restaurants page.

Getting to Antiparos: The morning after you arrive (June 23), you’ll need to get to the ferry terminal in Antiparos. One way to reach Antiparos is to take the Paroikia-Antiparos ferry (on the left as you get off the Athens-Paros ferry). There are trips at 09:15 and 10:45, costs around € 5-6. It is a 30-minute ride.

By Bus & Ferry: However, if all the kids are doing it, you can take the bus. The bus station is next to the ferry terminal and the bus will say “Pounta (Antiparos).” These buses leave every hour (09.10, 10.10, 11.10, 12.10) and will take about 20 minutes to get to Pounta. This bus will stop next to the Paros-Antiparos ferry dock. This ferry runs every 20 minutes from 09:15- 13:00 and takes about 10 minutes. The latest you can leave Paroikia is on the 12:10 bus.

Meet the professor at the port of Antiparos at 1:30 pm. You’ll then take a bus all together to the village of Agios Georgios and check in at Zombos. Check-in will take place around 3:00 pm, followed by an orientation session and a welcome dinner.

Heading Home

On Saturday, July 19, you’ll check out of Paro’s Aegean Village Studios by 11:00 am and head back to Athens on the Paros-Piraeus ferry. (If you want to get help swapping your sim card, go back to the phone store before you leave.)

From the Piraeus ferry terminal, you’ll take a taxi or FreeNow (Uber substitute) to your hotel in Athens near Psirri Square.

14 Reasons Why? Hotel

You’ll stay overnight in a private room at “14 Reasons Why” (Miaouli 21 10554) between Psirri and Monastiraki Squares. 14 Reasons is a sort of upscale hostel. (It’s cute and has a sculpture of a monkey hanging from the awning out front.) Hotel phone is +30 21 0325 4918. Booking.com prepaid confirmation #6940807313. Breakfast on July 20 is included.

Hungry? There are several “TripAdvisor best in Athens” restaurants nearby. Taki avenue is about a two-minute walk from the hotel and there are 3 TripAdvisor stars on a single block: “Thes” (Taki 16 Psirri Psirri 10554) is a TripAdvisor “Best of the Best” and, on the same block are Kalimeres (Taki 14) and Bandiera (Taki 19). All are TripAdvisor “best of Athens 2024.” You have a 6:30pm reservation at Thes.

If you want a blowout last-night experience, you could try “Nolan” (31-33 Voulis Street), a relatively inexpensive Michelin-approved Greek fusion place. It’s about 1/2 mile from the hotel. I went nuts and made a 8pm reservation for you, just in case.
